Whether we like it or not the way we dress has a huge impact on the success of our lives. We are visual creatures and we make judgments about people, places and even food based on how they look.

Our ideal scenario is when we use our outer image to reflect authentically who we are on the inside whilst still portraying the traits we need for our success.

When we understand how our appearance impacts our first impressions, we can send a very specific message.

Something that I would like to explore with you today is masculine versus feminine styles of dressing. Now, this has nothing to do with the capabilities of either women or men but it is a way to describe each style of dressing and the impact they have. There are certainly men in our society that dress in a more feminine way and vice versa.

Firstly let’s start off by defining the two;

Feminine dressing looks more like:

  • Soft, flowy fabrics

  • Frills, bows and ruffles

  • Flowery or detailed patterns

  • Pastel colours

Masculine dressing looks more like:

  • More structured fabrics

  • Solid block colours

  • Simpler lines

Dressing in a more feminine way can take credibility away from your appearance. Do you want to be seen as warm and caring rather than credible? There is a way to balance both traits to your advantage, and it starts with understanding that you can change the impression you give by balancing out your personality with the way you present yourself externally.

Using elements of the masculine suits we can appear to be more credible. By this, I don’t mean you have to wear trousers and a jacket but simply consider the criteria above. By taking away some elements or changing a style we can give a different first impression.

It may be as simple as swapping this top:

For this one, that has less of the soft and frilly elements and a more structured look:

See how simple that is but it makes a big difference in the impression you make and it can certainly be part of your toolbox for creating a successful Personal Brand.

It can also work the opposite way, if you are in a situation where you want to appear more approachable and nurturing, introducing some of softer colours, frills or bows may help.

Have a look at your wardrobe today and run an eye over your work outfits, what sort of impression are you giving out and how can you make a small difference to enhance your Personal Brand?
